Chief Leonard T. King, Sr.
Chief Leonard King represents the Maryland Fire Service on the Board. He has been actively involved with the fire service for over four decades at the local, state, and national levels. He played a key role in the establishment of the National Memorial Service in 1982, and worked with Chief A. Marvin Gibbons to create the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg. Chief King began his involvement with the volunteer emergency services in Maryland in 1958 when he joined the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department. He has served in every operational office and most administrative positions of the department including Fire Chief. After 46 years of active service, he continues to serve as Duty Chief and Honorary Fire Chief. Chief King is active with other departments across Maryland. He is Vice President of the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Department in Prince George's County, Assistant Treasurer of the Deale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in Anne Arundel County, and Life Member of the Rocky Ridge Volunteer Fire Company in Frederick County. In tribute to his dedication to the fire service community, he is an Honorary Member of several departments in Maryland and others across the country including Big Timber, Montana. A career firefighter for 23 years in Montgomery County, Maryland, he retired in 1983. He had served in various positions, including Public Information Officer, Fire Investigator and Inspector, and Training Lieutenant. Chief King's leadership skills are well recognized. He is a Past President of the Maryland State Firemen's Association and the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association. Enjoying semi-retirement he continues to serve the Maryland State Firemen's Association as Secretary and Convention Chair, and the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association as Treasurer. He still finds time to collect antique automobiles and fire engines. |
