Cressona Fire Company No. 1 Celebrates Firehouse Challenge Victory
To defend their 2011 title, the department brought a busload of members and race fans to Dover International Speedway on September 30, 2012 for the 5th Annual Firefighter Appreciation Event. Since 2007, Dover has partnered with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) to host this special event to honor the commitment firefighters make to their community and to remember those who died in the line of duty. The afternoon includes a hospitality tent, special guest appearances, and tickets to the No. 2 race NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. All proceeds benefit the NFFF.
In 2011, the Firehouse Challenge was created so that fire departments could show their spirit. The fire department with the most Firefighter Appreciation Event attendees would be awarded a Miles the Monster trophy; just like the one the race winner receives.
Representatives from Dover International Speedway and the Foundation traveled to the Cressona Fire Company No. 1 once again on November 3, 2012 to present the Miles the Monster trophy. Following the parade, which included a Toyota pace car, with a supply of race-day tee shirts and pins for those along the parade route, the Miles the Monster trophy was presented and a delicious meal that was prepared by the members was enjoyed by all.
Cressona Fire Company No. 1 is hoping for a three-peat in 2013, as plans for next year's trip are already underway.
