The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and its partners awarded 78 scholarships to 74 children, 2 stepchildren, and 2 spouses. Of these 78 scholarship recipients 40 are previous scholarship recipients and 38 are new recipients. Recipients' ages range from 18 to 37.
For the 2011-12 academic year, the Foundation in partnership with the Motorola Foundation awarded over $205,000 to 78 recipients. Our partnership with ICMA-RC awarded $25,000 to 20 recipients and MasterGuard awarded two $2,000 scholarships for a total of $29,000. The Foundation and its partners combined awarded $234,500.
Scholarship recipients from 26 states will attend institutions in 30 different states. The recipients are preparing for careers ranging from Culinary Arts to Criminal Justice, and from Fire Science to Education.
The number of scholarships awarded has increased dramatically, over $1,771,500 scholarships have been awarded since 1997. Our scholarship partners have awarded $562,395 since 2001.
