A national labor leader for many years, Mr. Schaitberger was elected General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters by acclamation in 2000. He had served as a top advisor to three previous IAFF presidents since coming aboard in 1976.
He played a key role in creation of the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Program and is an expert on public employee pension issues. While president of the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters, he worked to pass the state’s Heart/Lung Presumption Statute and bills protecting firefighters’ pensions, health, and safety. He served as legislative counsel to the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems and was a cofounder and vice president of the Public Safety Employees Pension and Benefits Conference.
Mr. Schaitberger is a vice president on the AFL-CIO Executive Council, and a vice president of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department and Maritime Trades Department. He also serves as a vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the IAFF Burn Foundation.
