Camp Time – One of Our Favorite Times of the Year!

The Fire Hero Family Programs team is pleased to invite you and your children to attend the 9th annual Hal Bruno Camp, which will be held this year in Colorado, June 26 – 29, 2020. This special camp is open to children, stepchildren, and siblings whose firefighter parent has been honored or is approved to be honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. This weekend camp gives grieving children a chance to just be children, while also providing a safe space to share with peers who have suffered a similar loss.

About the Camps

CZC bereavement camp programs include use of age-based support groups led by licensed grief therapists. Each camper is assigned a “Big Buddy” volunteer who is screened and trained to serve as a mentor throughout the weekend camp. Campers and “Big Buddies” participant in traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts, games, and campfires.

Hal Bruno Camps for Children of Fallen Firefighters - Camp HAL

Camp HAL
(Ages 4-6)

This camp program is led by a licensed therapist who specializes in working with young children who are grieving. With support from NFFF staff and volunteers, the camp program uses play therapy to help children express themselves in their natural language. Camp HAL includes a mix of activities appropriate for this age group, as well as some activities for children and parents together. Children will stay with their parent or guardian overnight and when they are not in camp sessions.

Parent and Guardian Sessions

On Saturday morning at the hotel there will be a two-part session for all parents and guardians. The first session will be a panel discussion with adult children who experienced the death of a parent in childhood. The second session (optional) will be a roundtable discussion where parents can speak with one another about parenting challenges and strategies. On Saturday evening, the NFFF will provide dinner and a movie for Camp HAL campers from 5:00 – 7:00 pm so parents can enjoy time connecting with one another.

We hope that you and your children will join us for the 2020 Hal Bruno Camps for Children of Fallen Firefighters. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Eric Nagle at [email protected] or (301) 447-1431.

Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA),

Through the generous support of a grant from the Department of Justice, camp is provided free of charge to campers.
