Into the Woods: Everyone Goes Home and the Wildland Community

Thursday, March 28, 2019
8:00 – 9:30 am

Presented by John Tippett, Director of Fire Service Programs, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and
Bob Madden

“Fire Season” has been renamed “Fire Year” due to the near year-round outbreak of fires in the wildland and wildland urban interface (WUI). Structural fire departments with no previous wildland experience are now facing WUI events and seasoned wildland firefighters are facing longer work periods. This increased activity translates to increased risk and exposure to injury and death. This fast-moving, interactive presentation details how one fire department, Bend, OR, is addressing the threat and outlines what the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is doing to support efforts to reduce risk to members of the wildland firefighting community.

This fast-paced, interactive and dynamic presentation will be interspersed with clips from some of Hollywood’s most powerful movies to focus attention on four initiatives: Accountability, Empowerment, Emergency Response, and Behavioral Health. These initiatives represent four of the more pressing topics in today’s fire service.
