Men Forging Ahead – Let’s Talk Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums

February 26, 2022, 3:00pm – 4:30pm

Let’s Talk Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums

Did you know that men who have experienced a similar loss can be some of your strongest sources of support?

The Men Forging Ahead group is forever linked to the fire service through our own fire heroes, and sometimes, as firefighters ourselves.

Please join Eric Nagle from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the spouses, fathers, sons, and brothers in the Fire Hero Family community on Saturday, February 26th, at 3:00 pm (ET) as we will begin an interesting and engaging look behind the scenes of Memorial Weekend with our guest speaker, past Honor Guard Branch Director Doug Swartz. Doug will share insight about how the Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums members from across the nation prepare for and carry out the sacred duty of honoring your loved ones.

Doug has been a member or instructor of honor guards for over 30 years – starting with his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. Doug has established and assisted with the development of several honor guards and is involved nationally with honor guard instruction, ceremonies, and funeral response. He established his department’s first Honor Guard shortly after joining Clearwater Fire Rescue in 2001 and it has quickly gained national recognition. He recently retired after 20 years in the fire service and is the founder and Commanding Officer of the National Honor Guard Academy. Doug is involved on the national level and in his home state of Florida with both Honor Guard and LODD Response Planning. He has chaired the Florida Fire Chiefs LODD Committee and leads the State Response Team (also the Local Assistance State Team of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation) to assist departments with handling a LODD. Other notable affiliations include Board Member/Regional Director for the National Honor Guard Commanders Association; Honor Guard Command Staff for the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Weekend; member of the Advisory Committee formed for the development of the DOJ/NFFF State Response Teams and National Response Plan; and he assists with the Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial through his membership in the Florida Fire Service Honor Guard Association. Doug never lost the passion for what the honor guard stands for and continues to share it with dedicated individuals across the country.

The monthly Men Forging Ahead session is a place where you can express yourself in a safe place and without judgment while building lasting friendships and connections with other Fire Hero men. Experience support and healing that comes from sharing with others who truly understand.

As hard as it is for me to talk about my son, I love to talk about him. Sounds crazy to most but not to those that understand and that is exactly what we have with all these guys.” – Anonymous
