When a parent or sibling dies, the relationship doesn’t end. As the survivor continues to live, the bonds and connections continue. This retreat will focus on those continuing bonds and how we can carry the best of that relationship and that person forward with us, even as we grieve the loss. You will have the opportunity to meet and share with other young people who have had similar experiences. We will also include some practical “adulting” skills and some time for fun.
This retreat will feature Baltimore-based mental health professionals Eleanor Haley and Litsa Williams, founders and co-authors of the What’s Your Grief website. Eleanor and Litsa have over 10 years of experience in grief and bereavement, and both experienced the early death of a parent. They created What’s Your Grief in response to the lack of resources and support they encountered during their own experience of loss. The organization’s mission is to promote grief education, exploration, and expression in both practical and creative ways.
“Thank you for the great weekend. I had a wonderful time, learned a lot, and made new friends.”
“The friends I have met this weekend, along with the skills I’ve learned and memories I’ve made are, and will continue to be, essential and wonderful for the rest of my life.”
“This event showed me that I am not alone in my grief.”
This retreat is provided free of charge to eligible survivors. In addition, the Foundation will reimburse up to $300 of travel expenses and provide lodging for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the BWI Airport Marriott in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, outside of Baltimore; meals are included. You will arrive at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) or the BWI Airport Amtrak station, and there is a shuttle from the airport to the hotel. If you drive, there is free parking at the hotel.
