On June 28, 1969, Firefighter Edward Palenchak of the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #3, died during an explosion at a construction shed fire. Also killed in the explosion was Firefighter Vincent Mezevich. Mr. Palenchak was survived by his wife, Eleanor, two daughters and one son.


This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
