James J. Winters was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and lieutenant in FDNY Engine 278 in Brooklyn, New York, for 41 great years.
Born on February 23,1938, to Mary and John Winters, he grew up in Brooklyn, the oldest son and brother to Mary, John, Barbara, and Matthew.
Joanne and Jim raised their four children—daughters, Theresa, MaryJo, and Donna, and son, James—in Staten Island, New York.
Jim was many things in life. In addition to being a husband, father, grandfather, and favorite lieutenant, he was a volleyball player, champion ping-pong player, and loved playing softball with his friends at Engine 278.
Jim was patient and kind and always knew just what to say. Brothers in the FDNY knew him for his punctuality, steady hand, and lightning speed.
He will be remembered in every inlet, health food store, and NY Mets game. Listen for the sound of his voice reminding you to unplug the toaster before leaving the house or the hum of his radio while getting ready for bed.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by son-in-law, Phil, and daughter-in-law, Brianne.
He was predeceased by son-in-law and firefighter, Carl Molinaro, on 9/11/01.
He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Christina, Nicholas, Sabrina, Carl, Sierra, and Jody; his nieces and nephews, and many family and friends.
We will love and miss him always.
