While cutting fire breaks at a brush fire on October 18, 1996, she began to complain of chest pains and then collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered a heart attack. While hospitalized, she underwent a triple bypass surgery and was sent home after her condition improved. She died two days later as a result of complications that set in.
