Mike Mercurio joined the Urbandale Fire Department in the fall of 1999. He joined the fire service with a deep desire to help people‚ an eagerness to learn new things‚ an infectious smile and a caring heart. Mike completed his training and served the department as a Firefighter/EMT. Mike was a valued member of the department. In addition to responding to calls at all times of the day and night‚ Mike often responded to calls during the most difficult time of the day for volunteer staffing; weekday working hours.

Mike gave his very best on every call. He was proud to have assisted with the delivery of babies and he was equally proud of his efforts at fire calls. Mike’s last call was a vehicle fire near midnight on 2/17/05. The call was completed early on 2/18/05. Mike returned home from that call and died in his sleep later that morning. Mike left his last assignment with the satisfaction of knowing he made a difference – we knew that every time he showed up. Mike will be forever in our hearts.
