Michael L. DePauw

Michael ‘Mike’ Lee DePauw was a 51-year-old firefighter‚ father and husband. He was born in San Angelo‚ Texas and graduated from San Angelo Central High School. After graduation‚ he moved to Dallas and attended Dallas County Community Colleges and North Texas State in Denton‚ Texas as a Business major. He joined the Dallas Fire Department and served as a firefighter‚ emergency medical technician and was promoted to Captain in September 2001. Mike served with the Dallas Fire and Rescue Department for more than 30 years.

While he and his crew were fighting a residential fire on December 5‚ 2002‚ he suffered a severe heart attack and passed away.

Mike was a beloved husband‚ father‚ grandfather and friend. He was a mentor and role model to family‚ friends and co-workers. He was a hero to many people‚ both on- and off-duty. Mike’s love of family and friends was always evident and he really enjoyed the time he had with his grandchildren‚ Faith and Serendipity. He also loved to travel‚ snow ski and go deep-sea fishing.

When he was off duty he would make fire safety presentations to elementary students. He ran a construction business where he often performed work at discounted prices to help people who might not otherwise be able to afford to have the work done. Payment was often times made by barter. At the time of his passing‚ he was building his retirement home on Lake Bob Sandlin in East Texas. His widow‚ Sharon‚ family and friends are in the process of completing this home.

His father‚ Floyd L. DePauw Sr.‚ preceded Mike in death. He is survived by his wife‚ Sharon DePauw; sons‚ Scott DePauw and Chris DePauw and wife‚ Sharon; daughters‚ Katie Marsh‚ Jill Marsh and Pamela Marsh; grandchildren‚ Faith Kelly and Serendipity Elizabeth DePauw; mother‚ Pat DePauw; brothers Floyd DePauw and wife‚ Susan; Bobby Joe DePauw and wife‚ Tina; and David Wayne DePauw; great-aunt‚ Christine ‘Sis’ Houghton; and special friends‚ Bob and Kathy Hargrove‚ A.C. and Janet Massey‚ Buford and Linda Kemp‚ and Captain Hugh Wesson.

Memorials were requested to be directed to the American Heart Association.
