NFFF Forms New Organization to Address Occupational Health Issues Within the First Responder Community
The First Responder Center plans to become the leading resource for first responders and their family members in addressing physical and psychological health issues and to promote research in relevant fields to increase awareness of first responder health issues as well as prevent first responder deaths and injuries.

The Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award to Be Presented to the International Fire Service Training Association
The award will be presented at the 29th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner on April 6, 2017, in Washington, DC.
The creation of this registry would enable researchers to study the relationship between firefighters’ exposure to harmful fumes and toxins and the increased risk for cancer.
Donations will be directed to NFFF programs that honor fallen firefighter heroes, assist their survivors and help prevent future line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

Save the Date for These Upcoming Survivor Events
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is proud to again partner with Outward Bound for young adults, age 18-25 who have lost a firefighter parent. Outward Bound 2017 is an exciting 7-day program that will combine canoeing in the scenic Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area of Pennsylvania with activities designed to encourage self-expression and healing. This course challenges you to discover inner strength.
In 2017, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will partner again with Comfort Zone Camp to provide a bereavement camp for children of fallen firefighters who have been honored in Emmitsburg. For the first time, the Foundation will hold both the 4-6 age camp and the 7-17 age camp together in Colorado.

Earlier in 2016, twelve chiefs representing every type of department shared the grim realities of coping with a line-of-duty death in the documentary Giving Courage: LODD Chiefs Speak. In 2017, the Foundation will feature additional footage to help other fire chiefs and leaders to prevent future tragedies.
The risk of firefighter suicide is a growing concern within the fire service. More research has become a priority to better understand the issue and assist in developing interventions. A recent study of 893 firefighters by Florida State University and published in the latest issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Research shows a strong relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and suicidal thoughts and attempts among firefighters.
