Michael G. Elliott‚ 46‚ volunteer firefighter‚ Maple Rapids Fire Department‚ died October 24‚ 2001‚ when his vehicle was struck by a falling tree after he responded to a page during a tornado warning. He served with the department for 18 years. Elliott worked as a truck driver for a local steel company.
He never met a stranger. He was a nice guy to be around.
David P. Sutton‚ 27‚ a three-year volunteer with the Fraser Department of Public Safety‚ died on March 4‚ 2000‚ of smoke inhalation while attempting to rescue an elderly woman from an apartment building fire set by an arsonist. The Macomb County Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart honored Sutton posthumously for his heroic effort.
Gail Lynne Van Auken‚ 41‚ a four-year volunteer with the Overisel Township Fire Department‚ died on November 2‚ 2000‚ in a motor vehicle accident while responding to a fire call. She was a teacher’s aide and taught a fire prevention program that she had developed.
Ronald James Haner‚ 61‚ a deputy chief and 26-year career member of the Portage Fire Department‚ died on December 18‚ 2000‚ of smoke inhalation in a fire in his home. Haner was an avid hunter‚ fisherman and model railroad collector.
David A. Maisano‚ 38‚ volunteer captain with the Tri-Town Fire Department‚ died on April 8‚ 2000‚ of pneumonia after being hospitalized for injuries sustained in a fall from a fire truck while securing ladders after a fire.
Terry True ‘Ted’ Oliver‚ Sr.‚ 58‚ Assistant Chief of the Eaton Rapids City Fire Department‚ died on February 19‚ 1999‚ of a heart attack after collapsing at the scene of a house fire. A volunteer firefighter for 33 years‚ his family has served the fire department for over 100 years. Oliver retired from GM after 33 years and began building homes ‘just for fun.’
