Geoffrey E. Guja‚ 47‚ lieutenant‚ FDNY‚ Battalion. He was also a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center. Guja spent every summer on his houseboat and surfing on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach with his wife and two daughters. Renowned for his love of a good time‚ he lifted the spirits of everyone with whom he associated. Recovering from an injury‚ he was on light duty when the alarm for the World Trade Center sounded. He got on the subway and geared up with another company to respond to the emergency.
Hello. My name is Chad Davis and I’m a firefighter for Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue in Murfreesboro, TN. I just wanted the family of Geoffrey to know that I climbed 110 floors today in the Nashville 9/11 memorial stair climb in his honor. It was a pleasure and an honor to wear his picture around my neck for the duration of the climb. He can rest easy knowing that he will never be forgotten by his many brothers and sisters throughout this great profession. I’m sorry for your family’s loss.

My name is Justin Bernard and I am the Command Chaplain onboard USS NEW YORK (LPD-21). As you may know, our ship carries with it, 7 ½ tons of World Trade Center Steel that has been forged into the keel of the ship. We take great pride in knowing that as we deploy to protect our nation and others around the world, we do so with not just steel, but stories, legacies and memories of those that paid the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.
I am writing simply to tell you that tonight, while deployed overseas on this great warship, I prayed for Geoffrey and his family. Each night onboard US Naval Vessels, the Chaplain has the privilege to pray over the 1MC (loudspeaker) 5 minutes before lights-out. Since coming to the ship a year and a half ago, in addition to the prayer needs of the crew, I pray by name for the families of 1 fallen firefighter each night we are underway. I am going alphabetically through the list of 343 and tonight, my prayer was for Geoffrey.
I do not always find contact information for the families but when I do, I like to pass along that they have been prayed for, and to remind them that the entire crew of NEW YORK is behind them. We are behind you. Our ship will continue taking the fight to the enemy in honor of Geoffrey and 342 of his brothers who perished with him that day.

Hey, this is going to sound very wild and maybe out of place but we may never met but you are the reason why I actually joined the fire service in 2011.
Shortly after your passing my parents, grandparents, uncle and aunt would talk highly of you and also your wildness. My uncle, your good friend Gerald Lacombe would brag about how you were a leader. A man of men, hero of hero’s, put the bad in badass, laugh of the party but got your back no matter what, and a standard of what should a man be, yet being humble and kind.
As child just turning 10 at your passing, my family was upset of your sacrifice but the sacrifice you made was honorable. For the next couple years I would hear stories from my family how you were and it made me get into the fire service. I wanted to be that type of guy in this world. I started volunteering in the neighborhood I grew up in and then went career in another jurisdiction in 2015.
I started to make a difference with the mind set my family said you had. Actually saving a child and their mother in one call in a fire in 2015.
At FDIC in 2017 the group of guys I was with go, let’s do the 911 stair climb. I personally have not done one but I told myself if I did, I am doing it for a reason. I requested your card at the desk and after several minutes of going what is the wait. I got it.
I felt so happy I contacted my uncle Gerald in New York. I did that stair climb with honor. When I hate to say most firefighters do a 9/11 stair climb to just do it.
After making a difference in my small world, the last time I talked to my uncle Gerald when he was alive. I told him I do what I do because hearing the stories from your friend. So with that you made a difference in a child that you never met off of stories from the people that loved you. You are a true hero sir.
