Lewis Edward Williams‚ 47‚ a 17-year volunteer with Fort Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue‚ died on May 14‚ 1999‚ of a heart attack while working at the scene of a trench collapse rescue. A decorated U. S. Navy veteran‚ Williams was Fort Oglethorpe’s Firefighter of the Year in 1988.
