Firefighter Tribute

Honoring Shreeve’s Stable Fire Memorial

The Memorial shows a firefighter rendering aid to a fallen comrade while two others continue to battle the blaze. This signifies the necessity to complete the mission, even while feeling the concern and grief for a comrade.

More About the Tribute

This monument is located in Glenwood Cemetery, 2219 Lincoln Road, NE. The obelisk, sculpted by Washington artist Charles Rousseau, depicts scenes from the Shreeve’s Stable fire, where Firefighter Benjamin Grenup of Columbia Engine No. 1 died in the line of duty in 1858.

The inscription reads: This monument is erected by Columbia Engine No. 1 to perpetuate the memory and noble deeds of a gallant fireman. A truer nobler trustier heart, more loving or more loyal, never beat within a human breast.

Columbia Engine No. 1 is now known as Engine Company 3.
