CFSI Accepting Nominations for Fire Service Leadership Awards

National Awards Recognize Individual and Organizational Leadership

The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) is now accepting nominations for the CFSI/Motorola Solutions Mason Lankford Fire Service Leadership Award and the CFSI/NFFF 2018 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award. The deadline for submissions is December 7, 2017.

Established in 1998, the Mason Lankford Fire Service Leadership Award is jointly sponsored by CFSI and Motorola Solutions. The award recognizes individual leadership in advancing fire and life safety initiatives. The award is named after the late Mason Lankford, a former fire service leader from the state of Texas who worked closely with former Congressman Curt Weldon in establishing the Congressional Fire Services Caucus in 1987. The criteria embrace the importance of advocacy and leadership on behalf of all firefighters and emergency services personnel.

Co-sponsored by CFSI and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award was established in 2009 to recognize public safety organizations for outstanding contributions to the advancement of firefighter health and safety. The criteria are based on the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives developed by fire service officials in 2004 at the Firefighter Life Safety Summit in Tampa, FL. Named in honor of retired Senator Paul S. Sarbanes of Maryland, the award pays tribute to the Senator’s legacy of contributions to the fire service, including the authorizing legislation that established the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 25 years ago.

The award presentations will take place at the 30th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner on April 19, 2018. The Dinner is part of a larger program hosted by CFSI – the 30th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Symposium and Dinner – which will take place April 18 – 19, 2018. This two-day event is designed to educate fire service officials on federal legislation and policies impacting the fire service and how fire service leaders can engage our nation’s policy makers to advocate on behalf of the fire and emergency services.
