On June 22, 1974, severe storms rolled through northwest Iowa, bringing torrential rains, powerful winds, and multiple funnel clouds to the rural community of Remsen. Amid the chaos, 18-year-old Jean Heidesch, a recent high school graduate, lost control of her vehicle. She struck a utility pole and crashed into a ditch.

The Remsen Fire Department responded swiftly, navigating dangerous conditions to reach the scene. Among the responders was Firefighter Robert Leonard “Bob” Arens. While attempting to rescue Jean from the wreckage, Bob came in contact with a downed power line.

Tragically, both Bob and Jean died from their injuries.

More About Memorial Monday

Memorial Monday is established to remember the sacrifice of firefighters who died in the line of duty before the National Memorial was created in 1981. On the last Monday of every month, a firefighter, or groups of firefighters, will be remembered as we share information about these firefighters and their sacrifice.
