On September 27, 1906, the Milwaukee Fire Department suffered the loss of Fireboat Pilot Hugh Clark, who served aboard Fireboat 17.

At 55 years old, Pilot Clark had devoted his life to protecting Milwaukee’s harbor and the people who depended on it. That September day, while tending to the vessel’s boiler, he fell through an open hatch and sustained injuries from which he did not recover.

Though more than a century has passed, his sacrifice is not forgotten. Pilot Clark’s courage and service remain part of the proud history of the Milwaukee Fire Department, and his memory endures in the traditions of the fire service.

We honor him today with gratitude and remembrance.

More About Memorial Monday

Memorial Monday is established to remember the sacrifice of firefighters who died in the line of duty before the National Memorial was created in 1981. On the last Monday of every month, a firefighter, or groups of firefighters, will be remembered as we share information about these firefighters and their sacrifice.
