Hugh Clark

On September 27, 1906, Fireboat Pilot Hugh Clark of Milwaukee’s Fireboat 17 died following an accident aboard the vessel. At 55 years old, Clark had spent his career protecting the harbor and those who depended on it. While tending to the boiler that day, he fell through an open hatch and sustained injuries from which he did not recover.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
