Dan L. Deyo

Danny L “Dan” Deyo, age 73, a lifelong resident of Morley, Michigan, was born March 14, 1948, the son of Frank and Alice (Smith) Deyo.

After graduating from Morley Stanwood High School in 1966, Dan began his career as a second-generation firefighter, a calling that would span nearly 54 years with Morley Area Fire and Rescue. Dan served with distinction as chief for over 25 of those years.

Dan began working for his father’s business, Frank’s Sporting Goods, while attending Ferris State College (University) for his Bachelor of Science. He and his first wife of 28 years, Debra, would eventually take ownership of the store, overseeing operations for several years while raising their three children.

Dan would ultimately pursue a career as a paramedic, serving his community for over 25 years with Mecosta County EMS. He maintained that license from 1982 and trained countless first responders as an EMS Instructor Coordinator and Fire Instructor for the State of Michigan.

A true pioneer, in 1973 he helped found Morley Rescue, Mecosta County’s first rescue unit, providing prehospital EMS care to the citizens of his community. Dan was a member of the Mecosta County Fire Training Association, Fire Chiefs Association, Medical First Responder Board, 911 Tech Advisory Board, and Hover Craft Team. He also spent many years assisting at powerboat races with Tri-State Water Rescue Team (“River Rats”) around the Midwest and Canada.

A man of many passions, Dan was an avid sportsman and found great joy in fishing, shooting guns, and hunting. His love for hockey was undeniable, and he remained a loyal fan of both the Detroit Red Wings and Ferris State Bulldogs. In his younger days, he raced dirt bikes with friends, later savoring the open road on his motorcycle. His love of travel and camping created a legacy of cherished family vacations and enduring memories.

Dan was the cornerstone of his family, a truly devoted and loving presence. To his three children, Emilie, Ashley, and Eric, he was not only a father, but an exemplar of heroism, the family patriarch. He was deeply committed to his wife of 14 years, Melanie, and his love extended to his grandchildren, brother, sister-in-law, and sons-in-law.

Dan was a beloved friend, mentor, and pillar in his community. He showed profound dedication to everyone around him and was admired for his wisdom, humor, and unwavering resolve. His eminence continues to affect countless lives, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void that can never be filled. He will be terribly and forever missed by all whose lives he touched.
