Rob was born on September 24, 1975, in Parlin, New Jersey, to Robert and Sally Heaney. He spent his teens in Derwood, Maryland, and moved to Frederick, Maryland, to pursue family life.
Lt. Heaney served with distinction in the District of Columbia Fire Department, leaving a lasting impact on both his peers and the department. Starting his career as a member of Recruit Class 326 on 10/10/2000, he was appointed to Engine Company 14 upon graduation. After probation, he transferred to Engine Company 10, where he quickly earned a reputation for his skill and work ethic. He was later selected to go to Rescue Squad 2, where his passion for special operations took root. He served there, becoming an informal leader on the backstep, all the while working to improve his own skills and abilities.
In 2015, he was promoted to sergeant, serving at Truck 10, the Fireboat, and Rescue Squad 2. In 2020, Rob was promoted to lieutenant at Engine Company 21, but it was only a few months before he again returned to Special Operations, coming home once again to Rescue Squad 2. He would remain there for the rest of his career on Platoon #2. Lt Heaney’s commitment to excellence was clear at every step of his fire department journey. Known for his calm under pressure, his booming voice was a reassuring sound during high-stress situations, providing clear direction when it was needed most.
Rob was a mentor and role model to those around him. His dedication to teaching, training, and physical fitness set a standard for others to follow. He was one of the strongest men on the job, physically and mentally, and his passion for innovation in special operations made him a driving force in the department.
His leadership, professionalism, and ability to stay cool in any emergency earned him the respect of his fellow firefighters. He pushed others to be better, always looking for ways to improve tactics and safety. A dedicated DCFD firefighter for 24 years, Lt. Heaney’s legacy lives on through the many firefighters he mentored, the standard he set for excellence, and the consistent leadership he displayed on every run. His contributions to the DCFD will not be forgotten.
When Rob was not doting on his beloved wife, Beth, or their two children, Molly and Finn, he was known for his love of the outdoors, which included mountain biking, coaching softball, and skiing. An expert landscaper and an exceptional cook, he was always eager to share a meal with family and friends.
Rob’s legacy of service, love, and dedication will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and the community he so selflessly served.
