Division Chief
Age: 59
Year of Death: 2025
Year Honored:

Shaun F. Ward

Shaun Ferris Ward was born on October 8, 1965, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed away on March 19, 2025, in Lynden, Washington, after an 18-month battle from oligodendroglioma, a type of cancerous brain tumor. His passing marks the end of a life of dedication to service, leadership, and family.

Shaun’s journey into public service began in 1999 when he joined Fire District 8 in Bellingham, Washington. What started as a passion quickly evolved into a distinguished career. In 2007, Shaun became a full-time firefighter with North Whatcom Fire & Rescue and was promoted just a year later to lieutenant. His commitment and leadership continued to shine as he rose to the position of shift captain in 2011 and ultimately division chief of Support Services in 2022. Throughout his career, Shaun played an instrumental role in shaping the future of the fire service by mentoring new recruits at the fire academy, helping others discover their own calling in the few that meant so much to him. Despite his cancer, Shaun continued to work faithfully until retiring in 2024.

Shaun’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time with his family. Shaun is survived by his daughter, Brittney, and husband, Levi Jansen; grandchildren, Savannah (Colby) Tjoelker, Tatum, Brooklynn, Axton Wiebe, Tinsley Jansen; great-granddaughter, Margot Tjoelker; father, Ferris Ward, of Utah; and mother, Joyce Peterson, of Oregon.

Shaun was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 30 years, Pamela. Their partnership stood as a testament to their enduring love and support. Shaun was also predeceased by stepparents Matilda Ward of Utah and Jack Peterson of Oregon.

If there is one thing to take away from Shaun’s passing, it is that no matter what comes your way, you push through and take each day with gratitude. Shaun’s life was well lived. He gave his all each day and didn’t let the hard days bring him down. He loved his grandchildren fiercely. They brought him so much joy, and making memories with them was so important to him. His life with Pamela was one of stillness, enjoying their time together each day along with their four pups. Many summer days, you could find Shaun smoking a brisket while basting it in his homemade Wardie Sauce.

This place isn’t the same with Shaun gone, but his memory will live on forever. He will forever be in our hearts and memory. To our hero, watch over us and keep us safe.
