Remembering Chief Leonard T. King, Sr.

Leonard King

It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Retired Chief Leonard T. King, Sr., of Deale, Maryland, died Thursday, February 1, at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland.

Chief King represented the Maryland Fire Service on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Board of Directors from 2003-2015. He played a key role in establishing the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in 1982 and worked with Chief A. Marvin Gibbons to create the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg.

He was active with the fire service for over four decades at the local, state, and national levels. Upon graduation from Damascus High School, he attended the University of Maryland to study fire engineering and received his Associate of Arts Degree in Fire Science from Montgomery College.

A career firefighter for 23 years in Montgomery County, Maryland, he retired in 1983. Chief King served in various positions, including Public Information Officer, Fire Investigator and Inspector, and Training Lieutenant. He was the President of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (1985-1986) and the President of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association (1990-1991).
