Charles E. H. Lauber‚ Jr.‚ 55‚ volunteer firefighter‚ Smithtown Fire Department‚ died December 24‚ 2000‚ from injuries sustained earlier in a fall. He served with the department for 35 years and was fire commissioner and former chief. He was responsible for the design‚ development‚ and installation of the district’s Board of Fire Commissioners. He was a caring compassionate person whose absence leaves a tremendous void.
