Dennis Hackman

In June of 1972, Hurricane Agnes, struck the area as one of the most remembered natural disasters. There were many days of pumping basements and collapsing walls. A rescue attempt was made on the swollen Pequea Creek to rescue 2 people. During this rescue, Firefighter Dennis Hackman was in a rescue boat that overturned throwing him and a second firefighter into the turbulent waters. Dennis’ body was found the next day.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
