Doyle M. Butler passed away after the engine he was riding in rolled backwards during icy conditions, causing Firefighter Butler to fall. He had been on the department for a couple of years. He left behind a wife, Elizabeth, a daughter, Peggy-Ann, and a son, John, who later joined the Chatham Fire Department.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
