Frederick H. Gallagher

Frederick Gallagher was born on January 2, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York. Born to Frederick and Lillian Gallagher, he was the eldest of his four siblings. When Fred was six, the Gallagher family set roots in West Islip, where Fred’s remarkable story unfolded.

Fred’s high school years at West Islip High School were marked by his athletic prowess. A dedicated member of the wrestling team, varsity baseball catcher, and a formidable presence on both sides of the football field as defensive tackle and fullback, Fred showcased his versatility and passion for sports.

His educational journey continued at NY Tech, where he pursued a major in business. Fueling his love for sports, Fred earned certification as a baseball umpire, eventually officiating varsity baseball for Eastern Suffolk Baseball. He shared his knowledge and love of football, starting by coaching 11-year-olds in the youth football league and then coaching high school football for over 35 years. His coaching career culminated as the defensive coordinator at St. Anthony’s Catholic High School.

In March of 1986, Fred made a pivotal decision, following in his father’s footsteps to join the FDNY. Over his 26-year career, he served with dedication and pride in the same firehouse on Sheffield Avenue, in East New York, beginning in the engine company and later transferring to the ladder company. Fred cherished every moment, often describing it as “the greatest job in the world.” He embraced the excitement of every run and operation, along with the unparalleled camaraderie that came with it.

September 11, 2001, left an indelible mark on Fred’s life. Engaging in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero, he later contributed to the clean-up on a month-long detail. Fred retired in May 2012. Tragically, on March 1, 2022, Fred succumbed to a 9/11-related illness, leaving an enduring legacy.

In July 2001, six weeks before the tragic events of 9/11, Fred tied the knot with his beloved, Ellen. Together, they reveled in the joy of boating and shared a passion for travel, camping adventures, and a love for live music. Their life together was filled with love and laughter.

Fred’s impact extended beyond the field and firehouse. A mentor at heart, he provided guidance to countless individuals, earning the respect and admiration of those he coached and mentored. His passing has left an immense void in the hearts of his wife and family and in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Fred Gallagher’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided to all who crossed his path.
