George Alexander Coates

Firefighter George Alexander Coates, age 27, of the Charleston Fire Department, died on March 4, 1949, when the floor collapsed during a fire at the Woolworth’s Department Store.

He is a World War II Army veteran who served both stateside and in the Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Opal; his parents Hagar and George Coates; his half-brother James; and his grandfather James.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
