James Coulter

Fire Chief James Coulter of the Erlton Fire Company #1 died on 4/16/1943 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 45. He was taken to the hospital on March 18, 1943, after collapsing from a heart ailment while fighting a fire in a building and discharged on April 7, 1943. On April 16, 1943, he again was taken ill and was pronounced deceased upon reaching the hospital. Chief Coulter was survived by his wife, Katherine and two sons.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
