On April 1, 2021, the FDNY lost another beloved member due to a September 11th related illness with the passing of James D. Shaughnessy.
James was born in Olney, Indiana, on October 12, 1944.
He attended and later graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York. Before joining the FDNY, James worked for years at the phone company. He was also an Air Force veteran.
James, or “Davey,” as he was affectionately known as by his colleagues, served as a dedicated firefighter for 32 years in the FDNY before retiring. He was with Engine 76, Ladder 22, Battalion 11 in Manhattan his entire career. Undoubtedly, that’s where he honed his exceptional culinary skills.
He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, boating, and skiing. He always looked forward to his fishing trips to Florida, as well as summers in Montauk. In addition, he had a passion for toy trains and collected many.
A devoted husband and father, James was sadly pre-deceased by his wife, Helene, and son, Keith.
He was a loving brother, uncle, and friend. He was a kind and gentle soul who is missed dearly.
If you were lucky enough to know “Davey,” hopefully you have fond memories of his contagious laugh or delicious sauerbraten.
Though he is not here with us today, we take comfort knowing he rests in peace with his family in God’s love.
