James J. Burns II

James J. Burns, also known as “Bop” or “Pappo,” of Monroe, New York, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023. He was 83 years old. The son of the late Owen Joseph and Beatrice (Reilly) Burns, he was born on November 13, 1939, in the Bronx, New York.

James attended St. Luke’s Grammar School and Cardinal Hayes High School in the South Bronx. He was able to achieve his lifelong goal of joining the fire department.

James was an FDNY firefighter for 25 years with Engine 83 in the Bronx. He ended his career as a lieutenant for Engine 46, also in the Bronx. He was a member of the AOH, Joseph Duelk, Jr. Division, the Holy Name Society of FDNY, and the Retired Firefighters of Orange County. He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, New York.

James is survived by his wife, Maureen/Judy (Morgan) Burns; his daughters, Lauren Burns, Maura Creeden (Kevin), and Erin Lee (Christopher); his sister, Kathleen Cowan; four grandchildren, Ryan (Amanda), Kaleigh (Tyler), Morgan, and McKenna. His newest additions are his great-grandchildren, Carson and Maeve. James was predeceased by his brother, John Burns.

James was a family man who was very faithful and proud of his Irish heritage. He was known for his humor and his witty one-liners. Through his 40 years with the FDNY, he was a confidant to many. His pragmatic approach to life provided guidance to family, friends, and brothers. He loved the job and all his brothers who became part of his family. He was forever grateful for that.
