J.D. Donahue‚ 57‚ a contract pilot with the US Forest Service‚ died on June 27‚ 1998‚ when his air tanker crashed while applying a retardant to a wildfire in Gila National Forest near Reserve‚ New Mexico. A resident of Mesa‚ Donahue had been an aerial firefighter since 1975. Another pilot also died in the crash.
