Roll of Honor

Lieutenant
Age: 48
Year of Death: 2021

Matthew A. Reid

Matt was born on May 22, 1973, to the late Gary Reid and Deborah (Ferguson) Reid of Fletcher, Ohio.

He graduated from Miami East High School in 1991 and was active in 4-H and FFA.

In December 1993, Matt married his wife, Julie, and together they raised three sons, Jacob(Amanda), Cody, and Levi(Jordan). He was known as Papaw Matt to his grandsons, Brian, Brantley, Braden, and Garrett.

Matt had a strong work ethic. After graduating from high school, he spent the next 27 years working long hours in the maintenance department at two separate local factories consecutively. In 2018, he was hired by the Miami County Engineers as a highway worker. This was his dream job. He had always wanted to be able to spend his days driving a dump truck.

When not working away from home, Matt enjoyed helping his father on the family farm. He loved Allis-Chalmers tractors and enjoyed collecting toy tractors.

Even though his father had been a member of the local fire department throughout Matt’s childhood, it was not until his son Cody joined in 2015 that Matt decided to get involved. His other two sons, Jacob and Levi, joined soon after. Matt immediately found camaraderie with the members of the Fletcher Volunteer Fire Department. Rarely did he miss Tuesday night truck checks or monthly meetings. It didn’t matter what he was doing when a call came in, he dropped everything and headed that way. He was so proud that all three of his sons chose a career in fire service.

Matt was a kind-hearted family man who enjoyed a simple way of life. Losing Matt has forever changed our lives. We are forever grateful for his time here on earth and will always hold tight to our memories of him.
