Melvin Lafayette Hatch

On May 19, 1943, Lieutenant Melvin Lafayette Hatch, age 40, of the Salt Lake City Fire Department, made the ultimate sacrifice alongside Firefighters Theron D. Johnson and Harry Christensen while battling a fire at the Victory Theater.

He was the son of John and Emma Hatch and survived by his wife Maude Rowena McClain.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
