On July 3, 2013, the FDNY lost another beloved member due to a September 11-related illness with the passing of Peter J. Casey.
Born in Brooklyn, Peter was the third of four children born to John and Bridget Casey.
Peter enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era and proudly served his country. He was honorably discharged as a lance corporal. He continued to live his life by a code of honor, courage, bravery, and conviction until his death.
He joined the FDNY on January 24, 1970. During his 32 years of service, he worked as a fireman at Engine 249/Ladder 113 and Engine 301/Ladder 150, as a lieutenant at Engine 221/Ladder 104 for the bulk of his career, and lastly as a captain at Engine 212/Foam 91 until he retired on August 23, 2002. Peter absolutely loved being a fireman and called it “the greatest job on earth.”
Upon retirement, he moved to Minneola, Florida, in 2002 with his wife, Lynn. He loved the Florida lifestyle. To him it was always “another day in paradise.” He enjoyed playing golf, making new friends, and became an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. He loved life, and it loved him right back. With his megawatt smile and contagious laughter, he never met a stranger!
He served in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001, and afterwards. In 2004, he was diagnosed with a 9/11-related cancer. After a long and courageous battle, he passed away on July 3, 2013.
Peter will be forever remembered for his kindness, generosity, wisdom, fun-loving nature, and patriotic spirit. He is deeply missed every day by his wife, children, extended family, and friends.
He is a hero in our hearts always.
