While responding to a fire call, Firefighter Eicke who was driving, left the station and suffered a fatal heart attack. The fire engine then struck a tree at the intersection of Union Street and Ford Ave. Firefighter Eicke was alone in the fire engine, and several volunteer firefighters were directly behind the fire engine when Firefighter Eicke was stricken. Firefighters administered CPR before rushing him to Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
