Fire Chief William Schneider joined the Coralville Fire Department in 1930. He was appointed Chief in 1937 and served until his untimely death on April 2, 1947 while working on a firetruck. His death was due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Chief “Bill” Schneider was known as a “hands-on” guy and was instrumental in his leadership at the Coralville Fire Department.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
