Senator Paul Sarbanes Scholarship

Scholarship Recipient

Gabriella Ambelas

Major: Nursing
Academic Scholarship Years:
Daughter of
Gabriella Ambelas

Gabriella is currently a college freshman. She shares that the support from the NFFF scholarship has played a crucial role in her educational journey. Initially entering college with confidence shaped by strong high school performance, the transition to the demands of a nursing program at DeSales University proved unexpectedly difficult.

By implementing consistent study habits and reassessing her approach, Gabriella saw a remarkable improvement in her grades and self-confidence. She drew a powerful metaphor comparing life’s ups and downs to an EKG rhythm—emphasizing the importance of resilience and self-assessment in the face of adversity. She expresses a strong commitment to continuing her nursing journey and honoring both the FDNY community and her father’s heroic legacy.

Retired Firefighter George Gulliksen says, “Gabby has exhibited maturity in assisting her mother to support her family through the hard times.” Adds Philip Solimeo, Tutor Supervisor, “Her passion for continuous learning and intellectual curiosity along with her exceptional qualifications and unwavering commitment to academic excellence makes her an exemplary candidate for your scholarship program.”

Gabriella’s previous scholarship was made possible with support from Motorola Solutions Foundation, MissionSquare Retirement, and the National Association of State Fire Marshals.
