National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Teams with FDNY for Annual National Stair Climb to Honor Fallen Heroes

National Stair Climb

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), in partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), will hold the department’s annual National Stair Climb on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at legendary Belmont Park on Long Island, NY.

The public is invited to join hundreds of FDNY firefighters, as well as firefighters from around the country, to honor America’s fallen heroes and to reflect on the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Participants will climb 2,200 steps in Belmont Park or will participate virtually from locations around the world. These steps symbolize the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers. The Stair Climb honors the sacrifice of a FDNY firefighter by symbolically completing their heroic journey to save others on that fateful day.

“The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation performs extraordinary work providing resources for the families of fallen heroes across the country,” said FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “By climbing steps each year, every participant not only raises funds to support the families of members who made the supreme sacrifice, they also ensure those we have lost are never forgotten.”

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund the programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters across the country and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.

“When firefighters die in the line of duty, the entire fire service community grieves,”
said NFFF Executive Director Ron Siarnicki. “Our mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen firefighters, support and assist their families in rebuilding their lives, and work to prevent firefighter injuries and deaths. The National Stair Climbs are a critical source of funding for that support,” Siarnicki said.

Belmont Park gates open and on-site registration begins at 8:30 am on Sunday, October 17. Participants will receive a t-shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring. There will be a post-climb reception for participants, and the Belmont race card that day will include several races in honor of fallen FDNY heroes.
