Private Gerard R. Desjardins was born in Lewiston, Maine on April 12, 1947. He joined the Lewiston Fire Department on September 2, 1969. He died in the line-of-duty on September 8, 1982 at the age of 35. Private Desjardins was killed when he was run over by a fire truck while responding to a fire alarm at 66 Knox Street.
