Senator Paul Sarbanes Scholarship

Scholarship Recipient

Jack McNamara

Major: Fire Science
Academic Scholarship Years:
Jack McNamara

Jack remains committed to earning his bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and later a master’s degree, with the ultimate goal of becoming a career firefighter with the FDNY. His dedication to the fire service began early—he spent his youth in Explorer programs, youth ambulance squads, and earned his NYS EMT certification at 17. He now serves with South Country Ambulance, gaining real world experience in teamwork, emergency response, and leadership. He also contributes as a County Fire Coordinator, documenting incidents for training and improvement, with his photography published in The Fire News.

At Eastern Kentucky University, Jack continues to serve through the White Hall VFD, works as a paid EMT, and holds a leadership role as Assistant Training Officer for EKU’s Association of Fire Science Technicians. Much of his remaining free time is devoted to honoring his father’s legacy through the FDNY Firefighter John F. McNamara Foundation, supporting 9/11 responders and their families. His activism has earned him the Ray Pfeifer Johnny Mac Award and recognition as an Honorary Director of the FealGood Foundation. Thanks to past NFFF scholarships, Jack has been able to focus on academics and meaningful service experiences that will prepare him for a future with the FDNY.

Assistant Chief Zibrim Banse says Jack shows a level of dedication to serving his community that is unmatched by his peers. He describes Jack as enthusiastic, independent, and a team player. He cites Jack as having motivation, dedication, professionalism, and integrity. Adds Chief Gregory Miglino, Jr., “Jack possesses a dedication and work ethic that is superior to others his age.”
