Lee Michael Kraus dedicated thirty-one years of his life to serving others. He served twenty-seven years as a firefighter and four years as a paramedic with the St. Louis Fire Department. For Lee, this was more than a career. It was a calling.
Throughout nearly three decades of service, Lee earned the respect of his fellow firefighters for his steady presence, sharp instincts, and unwavering loyalty to his crew. He stood on scenes most people will never see and carried responsibilities most will never fully understand. Whether assigned to an engine company or working in the back of an ambulance, he approached every call with competence, humility, and a deep respect for the uniform he wore.
Lee trained, worked, and built lifelong friendships within the department. He understood the weight of the job and the importance of taking care of the people beside him. He was known as someone you wanted on your crew—calm when it mattered most, focused, dependable.
While he was deeply committed to his profession, Lee’s greatest pride was being a father. His child, Kamryn, was the center of his world. He loved Kamryn fiercely and spoke with pride about them every chance he got. Every long shift, every missed holiday, and every sacrifice that came with the job was made with Kamryn in mind. Kamryn was his reason and his greatest accomplishment.
Outside of the fire service, Lee embraced life fully. He loved the outdoors and could often be found fishing, hiking, kayaking, or camping. He traveled to several countries over the years, always chasing new experiences and stories. He had a bold personality, a strong sense of humor, and a curiosity about the world that never faded. He enjoyed grilling for friends, trying the spiciest food on the menu, decorating his home with extravagant outdoor pirate themes, and proudly supporting Mizzou.
Service was part of Lee’s legacy. He was preceded in death by his father, Firefighter Woody Kraus, and carried that family tradition forward every time he put on his uniform. He understood the honor and responsibility that came with the name.
Lee’s life was defined by dedication, courage, loyalty, and love for his family. His example and his impact will endure in the hearts of those who knew him and in the department he faithfully served.
