Carrol Paul Thomas Jr. was born on July 27, 1956, in Oakland, California, to Carrol Paul and Phyllis Elaine (May) Thomas. He was fortunate to grow up with two younger brothers, Ned and Todd. Paul lived in Concord and Fresno during his early years and moved to Merced when he turned 13. After graduating from Merced High School in 1974, he began working in the grocery business while attending Merced Junior College. He had the opportunity to explore fire classes during his time there, which is where he found his true calling. He graduated from the firefighter academy and quickly got hired by the Merced County Fire Department.
Following the 1988 contract between the Merced County Fire Department and CAL FIRE, Paul transitioned to CAL FIRE, where he proudly served as a fire apparatus engineer. In 1991, he was honored as the Merced County Firefighter of the Year. Throughout his career, Paul worked tirelessly across Merced County, battling countless fires and serving his community with dedication. After 30 years of committed service, he retired from CAL FIRE as a fire apparatus engineer. Paul took immense pride in his work and deeply valued the lifelong friendships he formed along the way.
As much as Paul loved his career as a firefighter, he deeply valued his family and friends. Paul enjoyed many wonderful years with his two children, Sean and Kelsey, and their mother, Laurie. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with his significant other, Cathie. Paul truly loved his grandchildren, Callen, Quinn, and Emilia, and his spirit lives on within them all. Paul had a true passion for motorcycles, traveling, and nature. He took his family on numerous outdoor adventures and enjoyed many trips to Baja with his friends. He also loved working in his yard, spending time with his dogs, and caring for his bonsais.
Paul will be remembered as a respected firefighter, devoted father, and loyal friend. His adventurous spirit lives on in the hearts of those he loved, and his family continues to draw strength from the warmth and sincerity he shared with everyone he met.
