Charles Doll

Chief Charles Doll completed 38 years of active service in the fire service. He began his career with the Milwaukee Fire Department on December 1, 1886, and retired on September 20, 1909. Shortly thereafter, on October 1, 1909, he was appointed Chief of the Fond du Lac Fire Department. In August 1924, Chief Doll attended a meeting of the International Association of Fire Engineers. Although reports indicated that he was in good health, he stated that he was exhausted from responding to two major fires prior to his departure for the conference. He had also complained of feeling ill while directing the recent Sweet fire. While attending the conference, Chief Doll’s condition worsened, and he reported feeling ill to fellow fire chiefs. A physician was called to examine him, but his health continued to decline. Less than 24 hours later, Chief Doll died from an intestinal infection.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
