Charles Wittreich

Firefighter Charles Wittreich, age 68, of the Secaucus Fire Department’s Engine Company #1, died on May 20, 1965, after being struck at the scene of a brush fire.

At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of the Secaucus Fire Department. He joined the department in 1921.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; sisters Anna and Dora; brothers John, Henry, and Otto. He is survived by his brother Edward and several nieces and nephews.

Charles was also a member of the local Masonic lodge.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
