Clayton Ashmore

Chief Clayton Ashmore, of the Winchendon Fire Department, passed away on December 5, 1977, after falling ill at home and rushed to the hospital. Chief Ashmore was born on September 23, 1927 in Winchendon, MA. He became a member of the Winchendon Fire Department in May of 1947 and rose to the rank of Fire Chief in January of 1972. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the New England Fire Chiefs Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Winchendon Firemen’s Relief Association and the Worcester West Forest Fire Warden’s Association. He had also served for many years as the town’s Forest Fire Warden. He left behind a wife, Erline and two sons, Craig and Stephen, along with his mother and many brothers and sisters.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
