Roll of Honor

Firefighter
Age: 62
Year of Death: 2022

Dennis Lee McCollum

Dennis “Buckwheat” McCollum was born on February 6, 1960, and passed away unexpectedly, doing what he loved, on December 22, 2022. On October 16, 1982, Dennis married Marilyn, his high school sweetheart, who survives in Ohio. Together they have three boys, Dean, Doug, and Jason.

Dennis joined the Kalida Volunteer Fire Department in April of 1987, receiving his pin for 35 years of active service just prior to his death. His dedication to the department was evident, as he made the most runs in 2022. He was never seen without his pager on his hip and had a strong passion for heavy rescue, both department and countywide. He held various positions for the department, including captain, lieutenant, and heavy rescue board.

Buckwheat spent countless hours at the station making sure everything was in order for their next call and always tried to find ways to make things safer, easier, and more efficient for the department and community. While he viewed being a fireman as an honor and his civic duty, he also did it because he loved being a role model, father figure, and mentor to the young firemen.

Dennis was not only dedicated to the department but was also a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. He celebrated 40 years of marriage with his wife and treasured spending time with their boys and families. He was often working on a project at his home or the home of one of his boys, and his grandchildren were the light of his life. He enjoyed going on family vacations, woodworking, tinkering in his shop, and fishing.

Everyone knew Buckwheat, and he would always help anyone when they asked. He was truly selfless and a friend to all. Dennis was a role model to all who knew him and is deeply missed.
